Caulfield Residence
Steeped in history and rich with stories of celebration, this spacious home has been an integral part of one family's legacy since its construction in the early 1970s.
Originally designed by visionary architects John and Helen Holgar, the property embodies the opulent glamour that characterized Melbourne's mid-to-late 20th-century architecture. Holgar and Holgar's signature style—grand spiral staircases, cabanas, conversation pits, and gold-plated taps—brought Hollywood-inspired luxury to post-war Australia. These iconic features remain a defining element of the home and inform the direction of the renovation.
Today, the residence is home to the original owners' grandson and his family. Spread across three light-filled levels, it continues to serve as a beloved family sanctuary. We are privileged to have the opportunity to restore this legacy home, working in thoughtful phases to ensure the family can continue living comfortably throughout the renovation.
Our journey began at the heart of the home: the kitchen. With respect for the original design, we transformed the heavy, dated 1970s aesthetic into a beautiful and welcoming space. Dark Laminex veneer cabinetry and floral wallpaper gave way to stunning Arabescato marble benchtops that elevate the room. Curved cabinetry in a soft fawn pink pays homage to the home's retro roots while adding a fresh, sophisticated touch. A white 2pac island bench serves as a striking focal point and functional family gathering spot. Architectural and interior design was expertly led by CJH Studio, ensuring a harmonious blend of history and modernity.
The result is a beautifully reimagined kitchen that balances the elegance of the home's 1970s heritage with the comfort and style of contemporary living, setting the tone for the entire renovation.
